In this feature, Melisa Godinez, Director of Talent Acquisition at Inspira Financial, shares how she built her career through deliberate networking, why candidate transparency is non-negotiable, and how data and AI are reshaping what it means to recruit strategically in today’s market.

A Career Built on Strategic Networking

I began my career as a bank teller, spending five years in banking. During that time, I earned some college credits but hadn’t yet found a clear direction. Developing an interest in HR, I returned to school and completed my bachelor’s degree through Rasmussen University’s remote program while working full-time.

After graduating, I focused on networking. At one event, I connected with a consultant from Farmers Insurance who shared a recruitment opportunity. Though I lacked recruiting experience, my sales background positioned me as a strong candidate, and I was offered the role, launching my career in talent acquisition.

Seeking a more corporate environment, I continued networking and learned about an opening at Echo Global Logistics through an open house. I introduced myself to the hiring manager and put myself out there. I’ve always believed networking isn’t optional; it’s the strategy. You own your career and the future you build from it.

I continued taking initiative and aligning results with my growth goals, earning a promotion to Talent Acquisition Manager. Later, I joined Inspira Financial through a relationship I maintained with their Chief People Officer.

When the opportunity arose, I stepped into it, ultimately advancing to Director of Talent Acquisition.

Automation and Human Oversight

That same initiative-driven mindset shapes hiring today. In a competitive market, balancing speed and quality requires a blend of smart automation and intentional human oversight. AI has been a game-changer, as a single role can attract thousands of applications.

Our applicant tracking system uses keyword search to surface the most relevant candidates, ensuring strong talent doesn’t get lost. Tools like LinkedIn Recruiter add another layer, enabling targeted sourcing through advanced keyword and Boolean searches to find the right fit.

A Transparent Communication Framework

Technology alone doesn’t solve for candidate experience. With today’s volume, many companies go silent, candidates apply and never hear back. To address this, we built a consistent communication framework that eliminates ghosting on our end.

Every candidate receives communication when a role closes, even if automated. We also set expectations upfront. If there are four interview rounds and the process may take one to two months, we share that on day one. Every loop gets closed. Even a quick declination email update creates a more positive experience in a market where ghosting is normalized.

Transparency also shapes our partnership with hiring managers. Data shows where top talent comes from, how candidates move through the funnel, and which practices succeed. It equips us to have tougher conversations when the “ideal” profile doesn’t exist and shift focus to skills that can be developed.

For hard-to-fill roles, we don’t rely on inbound applicants; we build targeted searches on LinkedIn and scale outreach through LinkedIn Recruiter campaigns. We track InMail response rates and refine messaging when engagement dips rather than assume talent isn’t out there.

From Order Taker to Partner

All of this demands a different kind of recruiter. One who is current on industry trends and confident using AI and automation.

Consultative depth matters just as much and understanding the business is essential to effective recruiting. If you don’t understand what a role truly entails day-to-day, you can’t tell that story convincingly to candidates. When business acumen is paired with the right technology, you build stronger pipelines and deliver better outcomes.

This isn’t about being an order taker. The business should rely on you as a strategic partner who understands their world and supports their strategy.

Advice for Other Leaders

Use your data. It reveals where processes break down and keeps you honest about which skills are required versus those that are developable. Understand business needs, team dynamics, and core capabilities, and leverage AI to free recruiters to focus on meaningful conversations and serve as strong consultative partners.

Keep the long-term goal in focus. The best hires aren’t the ones that close fastest—they’re the ones that drive the most valuable outcomes.
